Oct 31 Motorola Phone Tools
Filed under (Technology) by Glen Lipka @ 11:20 am

First of all, it was extremely difficult to install.
I finally found this page which helped me figure it out.
The drivers for the phone were incorrect. The correct ones were in a zip called p2k.zip. The Motorola website was horrible. It refused to give any help. This site was more helpful.

The UI for the Phone Tools is just horrible. It is the worst interface I have ever seen. It tries to look like a phone, but doesn’t work. All I want to do is get a new ringtone and get the pictures off.

How hard can that be? And I know what I am doing.

Someone recently suggested this book to me, which I am finding fascinating. I think I will read others on this page.

Oct 28 High Crimes and Hopes
Filed under (Football) by Glen Lipka @ 10:58 am

The White House is facing lots of indictments for the Valerie Plame incident. I am hoping for Karl Rove to be put in jail, along with Dick Cheney and Scooter Libby. I am also hoping for the Jets to magically solve their Quarterback problem.

I do not have high expectations for either, but I you never know. I hope Justice will be done. You see, in cases where you can not control or affect the situation, hope is all you have. In situations where you can affect things, then a positive attitude is critical. I could picket in front of the White House, but Jared needs to learn how to ride his bike 2-wheels and he is counting on me. Oh well.

Bush may pardon the whole bunch. What does he care, he is retiring soon.

Oct 27 Work I Love to do
Filed under (Work) by Glen Lipka @ 09:40 am

What is Interaction Design?
What is Information Architecture?
What is Product Management?
What is Requirements Analysis?

These are the things I do to earn money for my family. But I love doing them, as well.

The thing I love best is solving a problem in an elegant way. It is a wonderful feeling to look at something you have done to solve a problem and realize that it is more than a solution, it is a beautiful solution. Quality is something you have to love. You can’t just like it. You need Quality to live. It has to make you tick. Otherwise, you will settle for the mundane, the adequate, the normal.

This definition of Quality is really interesting.

Oct 26 Great Blog
Filed under (Random) by Glen Lipka @ 09:24 am

This morning Katie told me a great story about herself while brushing her teeth. It was very funny and she was very animated. However, she refused to sign tghe waiver which would allow me to record the story for posterity. This is a general loss for the entire internet. It was that good.

So if you need a laugh this morning … you have come to the wrong place.

Other stuff: Alot of hype lately about Web 2.0, which basically means a new wave of richer applications. Check out Start.com from Microsoft for one example.

Some are touting Ajax and the idea that you can have a richer app by changing the communication model with the server. Some are looking to Adobe/Macromedia to make Flash the UI of the future. Some are looking to XAML from Microsoft to give developers a new canvas to draw upon.

I find all of the technologies to be exciting and irrelevant. This thought needs to bake in my mind more. Stay tuned.

However, one point. I believe it is the job of an Intgeraction Designer to think about the experience of the Engineers, as well as the experience of the User. One constant, I have experienced, is change. Applications change, requirements change, life changes. It is critical that an application be built to handle change. Abstract thinking and object-oriented design are critical to make sure that change is welcome.

Interaction Design is an evolving practice. Implementation based on expected change will allow the UI to evolve and improve.

Oct 24 Losers
Filed under (Football) by Glen Lipka @ 09:47 pm

The Jets game just ended a short while ago. Ugliest game I have ever seen. Seriously, it looked like a high school game. Atlanta was terrible, the Jets were worse. It was as if both teams were TRYING to lose. 7 turnovers. Blech. Vinny got hurt. Vinny is old (41) and has played poorly since before Van Halen broke up. Jets are losers. I am a loser for being a fan.

Also, I had to install WinXP 64-bit. Longhorn/Vista just couldn’t stop crashing. I will wait until Beta 2 in December I guess. Maybe I will try upgrading straight to the 64-bit version of Vista then. Stay tuned. Vista build 5231 is a loser.

Tonight, I hate Mountain Mike’s pizza. Katie, if you can hear me, I promise never to poison your coffee, if you promise never to suggest Mountain Mike’s Pizza ever again. It is terrible. I’d rather eat the Jets. Mountain Mike is a loser.

Good night.

Where is your nose? Where is your ear? Where is your brain? Big hug? Kiss? Say Thank You.

Matthew responds correctly to every one of these tests. He is a good boy.

Yesterday, we took the training wheels off Jared’s bike. He rode very well. He doesn’t exactly knowhow to stop or turn or start by himself, but once he gets going, he is great. He is a good boy.

Ethan has been practicing his L’s and TH’s and V’s. He is getting very good at them. He is a good boy.

I am blessed. When it comes time to sell the kids fo gypsies, I will get a very good price. Good boys.

Oct 21 Eavesdropping
Filed under (Random, UX) by Glen Lipka @ 10:07 am

When people are having a conversation really close to you, is it rude to eavesdrop? I mean if they are not being quiet and you were sitting there minding your own business, what are you supposed to do? I am sitting in this situation right now.

Should I put on my head phones? Scream? Pretend to be lost in thought?

The screwed up thing is that I want to contribute to the conversation, but I was not invited into it. Kind of a bummer actually.

Making it impossible to blog. Trying to think about Halloween. Should I wear my costume to work? Is that unprofessional?

Oct 20 A good laugh at Tom Cruise
Filed under (Random) by Glen Lipka @ 04:02 pm

Ok, if this doesn’t make you laugh, something is wrong with you.

First watch Tom Cruise on Oprah. I didn’t laugh at this, I was in disbelief.
Then watch Tom Kill Oprah. I laughed. It’s funny, come on!
Then watch a guy making fun of Tom Cruise for jumping on Oprah. I chuckled.
Then watch A funny cartoon about Scientology.

Apparently Tom Cruise is not amused.

And finally watch Stephen Colbert giving Tom his point of view. Even Katie laughed at this.

Tom Cruise is amusing.

Oct 20 The Devil and Mr. Republican
Filed under (Politics) by Glen Lipka @ 09:46 am

Finally the cracks in the Republican dam are showing. Delay is being indicted. Additionally, Karl Rove and Scooter Libby are on the hot seat and may be indicted as well. This just goes to show, Republicans are evil.

I heard George Clooney on NPR. He is very well spoken and a progressive. God Bless him! He should run for office. He was born in Lexington, Kentucky! That’s close to where grandma Alice lives and where Grandpa Jim grew up. He could run for Governor of California! Or President!

On the show, George wondered why Liberals are not creaming the conservatives on the moral issues. Liberals said women should vote. They said, African Americans should be treated like any other citizen and have the same rights. Liberals made southern conservative monsters stop lynching people. Liberals stopped child slave labor. Liberals fought slavery. Where has a liberal been wrong on these moral issues? In every case, conservatives have fought AGAINST these movements.

Conservatives liked lynching people. Conservatives didn’t want women to vote. Conservatives thought Jim Crow laws were terrific. Conservatives loved slavery.

Can’t we see that conservatives are evil? Why is the devil so much better at public relations that those striving for equality and fairness? Damn thee devil!

I’ve told Katie, “The children can do anything they want with their lives and I will love them unconditionally. But if they vote conservative, I will have to disown them.”

Oct 19 Vista troubles
Filed under (Technology) by Glen Lipka @ 09:32 am

Using the latest build. All of the sudden, blam! BSOD! The machine reboots and gives it again. I can’t log in at all. Safe mode works, so I tried different video drivers, no love. I tried this and that and still no love. It is starting to wear on my patience.

Next, I am going to try a different video card and see if that is the problem. nVidia is really moving slowly with their drivers. ATI seems to be much more “on the ball”.

Anyway, I will continue to deal with it. At some point, Beta 3 maybe, I am going to switch to the 64-bit version.

It seems that Microsoft’s Avalon UI is going to spur some incredibly powerful video cards. The amount of ram on video cards is going to explode. 1gig video cards are right around the corner. I bet before the decade is out, we have 6 gig video cards.
