Design all the possible solutions

I was designing something yesterday and today and couldn’t decide how a particular layout should be.  So I mocked up all of the solutions I could think of.  There usually aren’t that many of them.  I found 4 variants that jumped to mind for this particular design.

It is so much easier to judge something by looking at it and playing with it.  This is the process I strongly recommend.  Whether it is on a whiteboard or on paper or in PowerPoint, you should try to get your ideas out there where you (and other people) can see it.

It also helps people to frame the decision, not just in what they are getting, but what they are choosing NOT to do as well.  Decisions are hard.  Make a real choice between a few options and it becomes easier.
