Evaluating New Host – 2014

By | May 7, 2014

For the past few years, I have been hosted on MediaTemple. However, I kept noticing that the site would get slow or even fail to load sometimes.  I kept trying customer support, but they blamed some issue that they claimed was outside their control.  I don’t know if it was true or not, but I know that I couldn’t get the issue fixed.  It’s been lingering for over a year.

So, as I am tend to do, I started evaluating different hosts.  It’s a pain in the ass to move, but I was just fed up with the performance problem.  I narrowed it down to one host I had heard good things about.  They have a funny name, “A Small Orange“.

I registered a new domain glenlipka.com and set up a duplicate site.  Same content, same theme, same everything.  Then I started monitoring both sites and loading them from various places.

Of course, there is Glen’s Law. (I couldn’t find this law in this list of laws, so I am claiming it.)

Glen’s Law: When you have a nagging problem and start the project to fix it, the problem suddenly disappears.

Examples: Car problems disappear when you go to the garage; mysterious pain disappears when you get to the doctor.

Well, since firing up the mirror site the performance issues have disappeared.  So I am just waiting patiently to see which host screws up first.  I will likely end up with A Small Orange anyway because they are much cheaper.

If you could compare the two sites and tell me which loads faster, I would appreciate it.  Commadot.com and GlenLipka.com.
