These are currently my favorite comedy acts:
Flight of the Conchords
I love these guys. They have live acts plus an HBO series. They are brilliant. So many different styles, each funnier than the last. Here is my favorite live show from them:
Garkfunkel and Oates
They are like the female version of Flight of the Conchords, except with more dick jokes. They also have a ukulele prominently used in most songs. They recently came out with a special on Vimeo and have a series on IFC. Sometimes they sing really really fast and in unison. It’s kind of crazy, but I love them.
Bo Burnham is the darkest of the three. He has a new special on Netflix and an older one from a few years ago. (Below). Bo is also intensely musical with many different genres represented. However, it is his harsh truthfulness that speaks to the broken part of me and makes me feel less alone. I appreciate him the most.
All three acts are musical. I think there is a theme there. Sometimes I wish I could write music. There is nothing as magical (to me) as an entire crowd singing a song in unison with the artist. A song can last forever. Combine that with comedy and it hits me in exactly the right spot. I think that I could have been a good comedy writer in another life. I was considering going to something like The Moth or an open mike. One day…
