Peace of Mind

Nothing is more valuable than peace of mind.  You may have everything in the world you need and want, but if you don’t have peace of mind, you will not be happy. A friend of mine recently told me about a house she is considering buying.  It truly is a gorgeous house being built from the ground up with wonderful details.  The only problem: It’s a few hundred feet from a major highway.

Now for some people, this would be fine.  My cousin lives under giant power lines and doesn’t think about it one bit.  However, this friend stated that she thinks the highway might give her cancer.  I have no idea if it is true or not, but that’s not the point.  She THINKS it will give her cancer.  She will go to sleep every night and have an itch in her mind that she can’t scratch.  That itch will be the idea of cancer from the highway.  It will poison her mind and poison the house.  She will ultimately resent the house and anyone who she thinks pushed her into it.  She will have discord of mind.

My car is the same story.  I hate my car.  It looks like every other car in the world.  Peace of mind is not when you have the perfect situation, but rather you have a situation that doesn’t have poison in it.  I am talking about pebbles in your shoe.  A pebble in your shoe will drive you insane.  It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it will eat at you and you won’t be able to forget that it’s there.

There are people I know who can’t sleep well.  Their mind is a torrent of situations, ideas, stress and poison.  They can’t sleep because they can’t relax.  They have discord of mind.  This is the warning sign that you know something is wrong.  Think about those pebbles in your mind, that if only could remove them you would be at peace.  It is more valuable than anything.  Life is too short to live without it.
