Torture

In this MSNBC article, it states how most Americans (including Democrats) think that torture is ok, sometimes. Here is the passage:

Last June, in the immediate aftermath of the Abu Ghraib revelations, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said at a hearing of the Judiciary Committee, “If we knew that there was a nuclear bomb hidden in an American city and we believed that some kind of torture, fairly severe maybe, would give us a chance of finding that bomb before it went off, my guess is most Americans and most senators, maybe all, would say, ‘Do what you have to do.'”

The world is a scary place. People dressed as spiritual leaders molest little boys. People presented as responsible and visionary corporate leaders steal trillions of dollars. People we elect as our chosen representatives approve the torture and repression of our own citizens. Countries with enormous power and wealth also have a thousand nuclear warheads pointed to every corner of the Earth.

We must evolve as a nation. As Spider-man said, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” I wish we all took that lesson more seriously.
