Well Designed Stuff (2018)

Just a random list of stuff I think is COOL.

I am designing all of my work on it. It’s not perfect at all, but there are a few things that are just sweet. For example, I love the co-authoring capabilities. I wish all software worked this way. It makes me feel more connected to my co-workers. Hopefully, Figma will be able to fend off Adobe XD and Invision Studio. I have my doubts, but for right now, Figma is my jam.

This is JavaScript library explicitly to help you make robust grid/table systems. They just have a ton of functionality, its fast, works with React, inline editing, great filtering, animated. It’s a swiss-army knife of tables. I love it.

I use Slack for so many different reasons. Talking with customers and prospects. Networking with friends. For work, it is THE chat tool. Nothing else comes close.

I enjoy using it. I don’t exactly know why I like it more than messenger, but I do. It’s well designed. I haven’t used Trillian in a long time. For personal chat, this has been my choice.

Android Auto
Although the Android P beta has made it unstable, it still works great. I use it mostly for maps, podcasts and Spotify. You plug it in and it works. The only thing missing is Bluetooth connectivity. The UI could be better, but it’s still a vast improvement over the alternatives.

Salesforce as a Platform
I’ve become a fan. I’m surprised at the effectiveness of using it for certain use cases. If I were to build a marketing automation system from scratch, I would absolutely do it using the Salesforce platform. It would have pros and cons, but overall, I think it would be a winner.

Mesh WiFi Networks
In hindsight, it would have been MUCh cheaper to buy Google WiFi and not Eero. However, the money is spent. The good news is that it works perfectly. Wide broadband connectivity from every room and the yard. Hardly any maintenance and setup. Mesh is the way to go.

Since I have some room left, here are some things I think are NOT COOL.

I hate Facebook. I really hate it. I hate everything about it. I wish there were viable alternatives for group communications. To me, it’s a weird psychology experiment to make everyone hate each other. And it’s working.

Salesforce Classic
Lightning is not bad, but Classic has got to go. It’s so clunky, so old, so slow, such poor UX. I can’t stand it. Every time I see it, I want to wash my eyes out with soap.

Combustion Engines
We need better batteries, right now. We need to move off of gasoline and fossil fuels. Our society depends on it. We can’t count on the government helping.

I think it’s healthy to think about what you like and don’t like at least once a year.

Whatya think?
