New Theme – April 2010

I couldn’t help myself. I am using the 3.0 beta version of WordPress. It comes with a new theme that is pretty clean from an HTML standpoint. I haven’t made a theme in a long time, so I took the opportunity to build one up. Voila. It’s not done yet, but it’s a good start.

I have decided to use CSS3 in this theme which means IE is going to be sub-optimal. I suppose I made some IE specific fixes in a separate style sheet.

IE7 represents about 5% of my traffic, whereas IE8 is 23%. IE6 (BOO!) is just 2%. Firefox is the big dog at 44%, with Chrome+Safari bringing up the rear at 21% together. What does this tell me? That I am really close to not supporting IE6 or IE7, that’s what.

I think I will add additional fanciness in the coming weeks, but for now, here is what I have:

  • Fancy Font including shadows
  • CSS3 Curved Corners
  • CSS3 Drop Shadows
  • CSS3 Blockquote is angle

I clearly need to make the comments form prettier.  More to come, but I am happy to take suggestions. 🙂

  1. Your font drop-down menu is under your header in FF3.6 (and therefore unselectable). They just need z-indexes 😉

Good catch. Fixed. 🙂 Thanks Pam. Do you like the way it looks?

  2. I gotta say I really like the new theme a lot. The BG is great, although it may be a bit distracting. From a critic standpoint, I’d consider changing the yellow outline to a different color. Perhaps something a bit more subtle.

I’ll go ahead and say I’m deficient in terms of artistic ability, but they yellow (which is my favorite color) is a bit obnoxious to me.

There is something about blues with a stroke of yellow that reminds me of cool sneakers I once desired. Hopefully, it will grow on you. I still need to work on alot of details like the comments. I want to have a speech bubble pointing to the gravatars. Plus I want to update the form elements too.
