Uncommon Present Ideas

Buying gifts always seems difficult. I know I am not easy to get something for. I’ve been thinking about it and thought of some uncommon but good gift ideas.

A cheap Ukulele

You can get an acceptable one for under $50. It’s much easier to play than you might expect. You don’t need to finger pick. You don’t need to read music. The strings are nylon and soft on the fingers. Even if you play a wrong note, somehow it sounds good. I would recommend a Jumpin Jim songbook. It makes it very easy to know what to do. My favorites are the Camp Ukulele one and the 60’s songs. I think this gift would be appreciated at almost any age. I received one many years ago and loved it.

    Mouth Guard / Retainer Cleaner

This is specifically if you know the person has a mouthguard or retainer. Under $50, you can get this ultrasonic cleaner. I have a mouth guard and it was getting more and more stained. At the dentist, I noticed they had one of these and I asked what it was. Turns out anyone can have one and it actually works well. You drop it in and press the button. A stained mouthguard bothers me, but this thing works like a charm.

    Fidgets

A perfect stocking stuffer. Maybe it is because I love fidgets, but I think they make perfect gifts. There are so many kinds and all of them are relatively cheap.

    Gift Certificate for Art

This is an expensive gift, but I think it’s worth it for one of those “big gifts” especially for people who just moved into a new home. People rarely buy expensive art for themselves. Usually the pieces are small because the cost is exorbitant. When Covid started, the company I worked for liquidated their offices. I was lucky enough to get some large artwork they had in the conference rooms. I have two of them in our bathrooms and it gives a nice colorful hue to the decor.

The problem is that artwork is highly personal and picking someone else’s artwork will likely be off. But a gift certificate to an art seller allows them to get some art without the guilt.

    Happy Holidays!

2025 was a stressful year and 2026 is not showing any signs of improvement. I’ll do an end of year predictions later this month for but now, Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones. I hope you enjoy the time together and make lots of positive memories.
