Future retirement musings

Not exactly a bucket list, but these are things I can imagine myself doing later in life.

Educating product design

I think Seth Godin’s altMBA is a great example of how you can gather a small group of students and teach them high quality skills. I could imagine doing my own bootcamp to teach new product designers. I wouldn’t be doing it to make a ton of money, just for the love of design.

Write a design book

To get students for a class, I would probably want to write a book on product design. I have tried and bounced off it many times before. Usually it was because I did not feel I had enough money to retire from full time work. One day though, I plan to write everything I know into a massive volume on B2B SaaS Product Design.

I could, in theory, teach the book contents in a college environment. With all this said, I did not love school myself, so I might be just wishful thinking that I would enjoy teaching at a sustained level.

Tennis

My body is not aging gracefully. My joints have arthritis, my flexibility is garbage. I am constantly in fear of tearing my ACL or popping my Achilles tendon. I am planning on going to a gym to start strength training, especially around my joints. Hopefully, this will elongate my playing viability.

The reason I love to play tennis is when you hit the ball just right, in the middle of the sweet spot and the ball goes exactly how you imagined…it’s just a wonderful feeling. Sometimes someone else sees the shot, but often it is just you. I can go weeks on the high of one really good shot.

What may ruin it all

My biggest concern is that, on the day of my retirement, society collapses and falls into a dystopian nightmare scenario. Global warming had the potential of dislocating a billion people. This will unleash mass chaos and resource contention. Fixing it seems daunting. Right wing nationalism and out-of-control billionaires are as bad as they were before WWI. This does not bode well for the next 10 years.

If we don’t swing the balance of power away from billionaires, we may be on a very dark road. I had heard of a proposed law that I absolutely love.

Proposed tax law: If you have over 150 million dollars worth of stock, the government will take 5% of it annually. This is only applicable if your stock is worth over 150 million dollars.

No one with that amount of money is going to have their life changed even a little bit because of this tax. However, this measure alone would eliminate the national debt, provide universal healthcare, and pay for all of the things we value in this society.

All of our problems are because of billionaires. Spread the wealth and everyone can prosper.

Anyway, I was just thinking about the future. I am hoping for the best.
